DesignWorks Construction is a collaborative team of architects, buiders, artists, craftsmen, subcontractors and suppliers led by Chris Prokosch, Shannon Green and Kevin Black. An experienced crew and the finest subcontractors and suppliers in the area round out this company that has built its reputation on the production of custom, one-of-a-kind design-built homes. Based primarily in Southwest Virginia, DesignWorks has also completed work in New Hampshire, Texas, California, and Nevis and St. Croix in the West Indies.
Chris Prokosch
Architect & Master Builder, DesignWorks Construction
Chris Prokosch has over 35 years of architectural design and construction experience in a variety of building types including custom-built homes, home additions, commercial plants, offices, fuel alcohol distilleries and a private school. As he is both a designer and a builder, Chris has the unique ability to take a project from undeveloped site and initial ideas to successful completion with minimal stress to client.
Chris attended the Putney School in Vermont. While earning his bachelor's degree in architecture at Virginia Tech, he worked as a Research Specialist doing performance tests on solar homes across Virginia.
In his spare time, Chris is a bassist with various jazz combos in Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Floyd including the Floyd-Montgomery Jazz Project. He is an avid volleyball player and recreation league coach.
Shannon Green
Architect, DesignWorks Construction
Shannon Green brings over 27 years of architectural design experience to her work. With Chris, she leads the client through the process of refining and developing ideas to create a custom design that fits the site and client’s program of needs -- a design that is functional, beautiful, and ecologically responsive.
Prior to establishing DesignWorks Construction with Chris, Shannon was employed by the Dallas firms Corgan Architects and EDI Architects. She worked on a variety of projects for those firms including the American Airlines Reservations expansion at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Citicorp/Citibank International Office Expansion, and International Paper/Wood Products Headquarters.
She has a bachelor’s degree in interior design with a minor in architecture history from Louisiana State University and a master’s in architecture from Virginia Tech. She has also studied architecture at the University of London and in Lugano, Switzerland through the universities’ respective summer study-abroad programs.
In her off time, Shannon enjoys swimming, yoga and painting. She and Chris live in Floyd, Virginia with their three children.
Kevin Black
Master Builder
Kevin Black has been working on homes nearly all his life.
During a Designworks project, Kevin and/or Chris are always on site so someone is immediately available to handle the scheduling and questions that constantly arise with materials deliveries, subcontractors, building officials and inspections, coordination, and detailing. Jobs run more smoothly and are more fun when dilemmas can be resolved quickly.
Before joining Designworks in 1992, Kevin ran his own residential construction business in Roanoke, Virginia for twelve years, specializing in custom interior and exterior detailing, additions, and custom homes. Prior to that business, Kevin was a self-employed carpenter in Washington D.C. doing renovations in Georgetown and Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.
Kevin has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Purdue University in Indiana.
When not building, Kevin is paddling a sea kayak or canoe somewhere and is an Open Water Sea Kayak Instructor with the American Canoe Association, and a Sea Coach with the British Canoe Union.
